It seems like everywhere we look another fire has started to tear through the state. Fire season is one of the scariest times of year if you live in California. If order for our businesses to stay safe, we try to protect ourselves from any fire damage that may occur. To do this, we purchase and install plenty of fire extinguishers and alarms. But if you are installing a fire suppression system, it is important to know what you are dealing with in order to ensure everything and everyone is protected and safe if a fire were to occur. The first components to consider are active components:
- In order for a suppression system to be effective, detection is key. Professional suppression will use numerous sensors and alarms to detect heat, smoke, and other signs of fire.
- Once the alarm is triggered, traditional fire extinguishers may be able to extinguish a fire before the full suppression system is activated.
- Once a fire is detected, the fire may be combatted with sprinkler systems (wet or dry) or chemical-based systems (gaseous systems that displace oxygen, foam systems, or other extinguishing agents).
- Placement of fire hydrants and plumbing of pipes for fire fighters can help protect a business in case of fire.
Beyond active components, a properly designed system will incorporate passive components – such as firewalls, fire-stops, grease-ducts, and fire-rated materials to help slow the spread of fire, and limit exposure, and protect high risk materials from heat and flame sources. While these components will not necessarily stop a fire, they can help prevent or slow a fire to make containment easy.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, or NFPA, residential fire sprinkler systems increase the resident’s survival expectancy during an accidental fire by as much as 80%. Such an increase in life expectancy should also be expected in commercial buildings. The reason why fire sprinkler systems are so effective in saving lives is that they’re the fastest to respond and control a fire at its exact point of origin.
While it is easy to raise the point on how fire extinguishers are enough, one has to remember that in fires, it’s not the heat nor flames that are the most dangerous. Rather, the aspect that poses the most hazard to one’s health are the toxic fumes and smoke produced by a fire. And, given how smoke can easily spread and impede your vision, it’s already hard enough to walk around your house, let alone find a fire extinguisher to try and fight the fire back.
It’s also important to remember that sudden fires can easily spread out to uncontrollable levels in just a few seconds. However, with fire sprinklers, that few seconds could extend to as much as 10 minutes, which is more than enough time for people to evacuate the vicinity and for the firefighters to arrive. The NFPA also has no record so far of a fire killing more than two people in both a commercial or residential building where the fire sprinkler system was properly installed and working properly.
The added cost may seem intimidating, but fire sprinkler systems will usually be able to pay for itself in as little as 7 years, which isn’t that long in business years.

VENTURA, Calif. (KABC) — A fire broke out early Friday morning after a pickup truck plowed into a two-story office building in Ventura, leaving one person hospitalized, authorities said.
Firefighters from multiple agencies responded to the scene, near the intersection of Walker Street and Moon Drive, about 1:12 a.m. and battled flames that had made their way from the first floor to the roof, according to the Ventura City Fire Department.
An injured man who had been inside the truck was transported to a hospital in unknown condition. Emergency responders were unable to locate the vehicle’s other two occupants, who may have fled the scene, fire officials said.
The blaze was brought under control within 23 minutes of the firefighters’ arrival and was extinguished one hour later, officials said.
No firefighters were injured. The cause of the crash was under investigation.

Thanks to a fire suppression system aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, what would have been a sure disaster wasn’t thanks to the vessels suppression system.
“That fire started last Wednesday during a stop in Jamaica. On Sunday, the passengers who were on board returned to Port Canaveral. Heavy smoke could be seen pouring out of the top of the boat on Wednesday in Jamaica. A spokesperson for the cruise line says a fire started in the mechanical space of the ship. The captain ordered passengers to wear their lifejackets and go to their assigned evacuation station. “As we looked over and saw the black flames eventually erupted into a fire out of the smoke stacks on the 13th or 14th deck,” said Gregg Haynes, a passenger from Kansas City. “So we were standing there watching it as we’re pulling into Jamaica and the flames are just getting bigger and thicker(mynews13.com).”

A scary sight for sure, thankfully the vessel was equipped with a fire suppression system that put the fire out.
“As passengers were instructed to put on their life jackets and move to their assigned evacuation station. The ship’s fire suppression system doused the flames(mynews13.com).”
The ship was able to return to port that same week bringing the passengers safely home.

What are foam systems fire suppression systems?
Fire fighting foam systems suppress fire by separating the fuel from the air. There are different types of foam systems.
Depending on the type of foam system, this is done in a few different ways:
- Foam covers the fuel surface and smothers the fire.
- The fuel source is cooled by the foam’s water content.
- The foam blanket suppresses the release of flammable vapors that can mix with the air.

Engineered and manufactured fire suppression systems ensure a rapid, thorough, and economical response to fires and spills. Customized to application specifications, our dependable engineered systems include bladder tanks and pump-type balanced-pressure proportioning systems; in-line balanced-pressure proportioning systems; high-expansion foam systems; large dry chemical systems and skids; twin-agent systems and skids; foam trailers; large dry chemical and twin-agent trailers; monitor trailers; aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) pump systems; water-powered AFFF pump skids; foam/water monitors; nozzles; eductors; ratio-flow controllers; foam makers; foam chambers, and specialized proportioning storage and monitor trailers.
Listed high-expansion foam systems provide fire-fighting protection for diverse applications: aircraft hangars; basements; cable tunnels; flammable packaging areas; flammable liquid drum storage areas; hazardous waste facilities; LNG tank farms and loading facilities; mines; roll-paper warehouses; shipboard engine rooms, bilges, and holds; storage buildings; warehouses; and fire breaks. The light, voluminous foam blanket produced by our high-expansion foam systems can quickly obtain great heights, reaching elevated flammable materials (such as on storage racks). The foam blanket efficiently transports small amounts of water to the fire, encapsulating the flammable vapors and causing suppression and extinguishment.
CJ Suppression offers closed and open-head deluge AFFF systems, with both low and high expansion foam for industrial applications, chemical storage and large craft storage enclosures.

CJ Compression is aware of the fact that the environment around a fire can be the difference between a small fire and a colossal blaze. On January 6th in the city of Lufkin, Texas, a small fire broke out in a regional recycling center. Although all workers had left for the day, a worker from the nearby waste management office heard the sprinkler alarms go off and called the firefighters. When firefighters arrived, there were visible flames, however, the fire had been successfully contained by the sprinkler system. Had the sprinkler system not been in place, an empty recycling center plus a tremendous amount of flammable material, would have been the perfect environment for a large scale fire. This is one of the reasons why CJ Compression recommends setting up a fire sprinkler system, it can not only save your property, but also lives.
